Everything You Need to Know About Fall Fabrics

A guide to the cozy materials that will keep you warm through the chilly months ahead.

Oct 09, 2020

Cozy season has arrived! You’re probably in the process of swapping out some of your lighter spring/summer fabrics for heavier, warmer ones. There are a few autumn/winter staple fabrics that last the test of time, no matter the trend. We’ve broken them down from source material to best care practices for you.

Wool
This cold weather staple is one of the most reliable for the upcoming season. It’s naturally insulating, durable, timeless, and best of all antimicrobial. Caring for wool is pretty straightforward. It doesn’t hold up well when wet, so spot cleaning or dry cleaning are best. Be sure to keep a defuzzer around to minimize fabric pilling. Wool is the warmth of winter. With plenty of wool fabrics to choose from, there’s a look and feel for every vibe:

  • Cashmere: The most delicate wool, cashmere comes from the undercoat of the goat. It’s made up of super fine fibers, hence its smooth and soft feel. Our Cashmere + Lambswool Throw Blanket is a reliable investment that will elevate any look to snuggly sophistication.

  • Merino: Finest and soft to the touch, merino is a luxurious and reliable wool. It’s similar to cashmere in look and feel, but sourced from merino sheep. Our Faribault Wool Throw is 100% Merino Wool, made in Minnesota. Its classic reversible stripe makes it a classic piece for any interior style.

  • Lambswool: Made in Germany by a 100-year-old family mill, our Lambswool Throw Blanket is super warm and cozy, yet breathable. It’s the OG of wool fabrics and a bit rugged to the touch. Its fringed edges add a cozy casual vibe to any room. In timeless tones or stripe patterns, this is the perfect fireside companion.

  • Alpaca: Arguably the softest of them all, our Baby Alpaca Throw Blanket comes in a bold gray plaid that’ll be sure to add depth to any space. Alpaca is a bit stiffer than other wool, making it one of the more durable wool fabrics.

Cotton
Cotton is a year-round staple fabric. It’s especially great in colder temperatures because it makes for great layering. Cotton is moisture wicking and breathable, so you can layer up without fear of overheating. Cotton is also super easy to maintain, getting softer with every wash. So, go ahead! Throw that quilt over your duvet for a warm layered look. Our
Anchal Patchwork Quilt is handmade in India of organic cotton. Featuring traditional kantha stitching, this quilt is reversible, versatile, and beautiful on both sides.

Fleece
Fleece is probably the most popular winter staple fabric. Even though it’s man-made, it highly resembles sheep's coat. It’s a great alternative to wool when it comes to your wardrobe because it’s lightweight, soft, and breathable, but still insulating. Our Willow Sweatshirt and Classon Sweatshirt are made of 100% cozy fleece. They’re the perfect summer to autumn transition fabric because they’re a bit warmer than French Terry but much lighter than wool or shearling alternatives.

Whether it’s a warm wooly fabric, layering your cotton staples, or slipping on your favorite loungewear, there’s nothing better than feeling comfy and cozy in the cold of winter.
