A Fool-Proof Approach to Moving Quickly

Six steps away from getting this sheet over with!

Sep 09, 2021

I love to move, said no one ever. From looking for a new place to getting your things packed and in order just to unpack it all the next day; Moving can be exhausting. With a little strategy and a game-plan, you can be relaxing in your new place  in no time. We’ve gathered some pro tips for moving quickly and efficiently.

Declutter

The less stuff you have to move, the better. In the weeks leading up to your moving day, it’s best to declutter one room at a time. A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t seen or used it in a while, you probably don’t need to keep it. While decluttering, separate your lightly used items from your totally battered ones. This way, when all is said and done, you can donate or throw away.

Organize

Once you’ve decluttered, you’re left with the things you’re definitely going to move. Taking a loose inventory of what you’re bringing with you will help you get real about the task at hand. Maybe you’re the checklist type, maybe you just tackle one room at a time. You’ll need a permanent marker, some tape, and packing paper or bubble wrap. You know the deal. Sort your items by size, weight, and packaging needs. Small piles can help you get an idea of what size bin, bag, box, or suitcase you’ll need. Then, pack away.

Separate Valuables

Whether you’re moving a great distance or just up the block, you want to be sure the things you care about most are with you along the way. Mix-ups, breaks, and furniture dings happen while moving. Keep that family heirloom secured and nearby. Things like your laptop, chargers, and other most-used items should also be kept separate. This way, you have easy access to the things that matter most.

Pack A Travel Bag

Have we said it already? Moving can be tiring! Set aside a travel bag of things you might need in case you don’t unpack in your new place right away. This could include a change of clothes, a toothbrush, your skin care routine, and most importantly a set of sheets. Thank us later.

Use What You Have

Use suitcases, storage bins, Tupperware containers, and tote bags to pack as much as you can rather than buying new boxes. This not only eliminates unnecessary spending but minimizes clutter as you’re unpacking. Using what you have to pack means no cardboard boxes to break down at the end.

Don’t Forget This Part

The final walk-through. After decluttering and organizing your stuff, packing it, and moving it all away, take a walk through your now-empty, old space. Check all the nooks and crannies, closets, drawers, everything! Be sure you’ve taken all of your belongings with you.

A happy dance isn’t required, but totally recommended. You’ve survived the big move. Congrats on your new place!
